Tribhuvan University





Tribhuvan University was founded in 1959 AD.
Founded in 1959, Tribhuvan University, Nepal's first national University was geared towards modernization through a national system of higher education. It was named after Late King Tribhuvan Bir Bikram Shah Dev. The Chancellor of the University is His Majesty King Birendra Bir Bikram Shah Dev.
The University has sixty two campuses of its own and hundred and thirty four private campuses affiliated to it. The student enrollment in Tribhuvan University's constituent campuses is about 92,000 and in the affiliated campuses, the total enrollment estimate is 4,00,000. Today, the University is an academic home for about 1,50,000 students and about 5,500 faculty members. On the support service side, the University has about 2,300 people working on administration, about 1,500 on technical jobs and about 3,200 on utility services.

It is Nepal's first university and the premier institute of higher education in Nepal.
Academic Programmes
Tribhuvan University offers a wide range of academic programmes includning 300 courses at certificate level, 1079 courses at Bachelor's level and more than 1000 courses at Master's level. Currently, the total courses offered by the University number more than 2400. These courses are offered by five Technical Institutes and four Faculties of the University.


Tribhuvan University provides Doctorate, Postgraduate, Graduate, and Certificate level programmes. In the Institutes, the Certificate programme is generally of 2 years and the Graduate and Postgraduate programmes are of 3 to 6 years, depending upon the nature of the course offered. In the Faculties, the Certificate is of 2 years, the graduate programme of 3 years, the Postgraduate programme of 2 years, and the Ph.D. programme of 3 years.


Tribhuvan University has four Faculties, each is headed by a Dean.


Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences

The main objective of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences is to produce trained and specialized manpower in both basic and applied areas of humanities and social sciences. At present, there are 26 constituent and 110 affiliated campuses under this faculty. The number of affiliated colleges is increasing steadily. Dean’s office offers educational and academic cooperation to these campuses. There are twenty-one central departments with specialized study area. These include: Buddhist Studies, Culture, Economics, English, Geography, Hindi, History, Home Science, Journalism, Library Science, Linguistics, Maithili, Nepali, Nepal Bhasha, Political Science, Population, Psychology, Rural Development, Sanskrit,Sociology, and Strategic Studies. Nine other subjects are taught at Bachelor levels only.These include: Dance, Film Studies, International languages, Mathematics, Music, Painting, Philosophy, Sculpture, Social work, Statistics, and Urdu. Among the subjects mentioned above statistics and mathematics are taught in collaboration with Science Faculty.The Faculty offers Certificate, Bachelor and Master Level courses in most of the areas mentioned above. This Faculty also conducts research methodology courses and offers supervision for full-time study leading to the Ph.D.degree.
This Faculty also offers special one-year courses such as: Postgraduate Diploma in Women’s Studies, Bachelor in Library Science, Postgraduate Diploma in Buddhist Studies, Postgraduate Diploma in Counseling Psychology, Nepal American Studies under the Central Department of English.
Other details of the Faculty include:•

The Dean’s office offers educational and academic cooperation to these central departments as well as to other subject that are introduced to Bachelor Level only in accordance with TU regulations.• The Dean’s office is also proactive in creation of Standing Committee, Subject Committee and Faculty Board of different disciplines. • When constituent or affiliated colleges propose to add new subjects, upgrade the evels and programmes, the Dean’s office takes necessary steps and procedures to evaluate the capacity, capability• Dean’s office also in cooperation of respective departments is in the process of introducing M. Phil. courses.• It conducts Ph.D. programmes in coordination with Central Department and with the help of concerned specialists.

Faculty of Management



The objectives of this Faculty are:• to educate students for professional pursuits in business, industry and government; and• to contribute to the knowledge and understanding of business and administration.The Faculty of Management (FOM) has its ultimate objective of educating students for professional pursuits in business, industry and government. It is further dedicated to contributing to enhance the knowledge and understanding of business and administration The Faculty offers instruction leading to Bachelor of Business Studies (BBS), Bachelor of Travel and Tourism (BTTM), Bachelor of Hotel Management (BHM), Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA), Bachelor of Information Management (BIM), Master of Business Studies (MBS), Master of Business administration (MBA), Master of Public Administration (MPA) and M. Phil. The Faculty offers supervision for full time study leading to the Ph.D.degree.

Faculty of Law

The basic objective of Faculty of Law is to produce high and midium level legal manpower to fulfill the demand of the legal professionals for the nation. The Faculty of Law offers three categories of academic programmes such as:

• LLB (Bachelor of Law)

• LLM (Master of Law)

• Ph.D.
The Faculty of Law has its bi-annual research journal, Nepal Law Review. Faculty of Law organizes regular interaction programmes for practicing lawyers, legal officers of the government agencies and the law teachers.
Faculty of Law conducts mini researchprogrammes for the teachers and for the postgraduate students. Under the faculty of law two research organizations are in operation:


• Human Right Centre

• Environmental Law Centre


They conduct regular seminars and talk programmes.
These centres have partnership with the Human Right Law Centre of Nottingham University of UK and the Social Policy in Law programmes of the University of Washington in St.Louis, U.S.A.

Faculty of Education

The main objective of the Faculty of Education is to produce trained teachers, education specialists, education planners, supervisors, curriculum designers and educational administators.
The objectives of this Faculty are:


• To institutionalize teacher development activities in the country;

• To produce trained teachers;

• To produce teacher educators, education specialist,educational planners, supervisor and education administrators;



The Faculty runs two types of academic programmes – General Education and Vocational Education. Under General Education, currently, the Faculty runs Two- Year Proficiency Certificate (I.Ed.), Three-Year Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.), One-Year Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) and Two-Year Master in Education (M.Ed.) programmes. The Faculty has also offered Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) programme of three years duration. All the preparations for M.Phil. programmes have been completed and accordingly classes are scheduled to start from the 1st of July 2005 (Ashad 17, 2062.)


English Education, Nepali Education, Mathematics Education, Science Education, Health Education and Physical Education, Geography Education, History Education, Economics Education, Political Science Education are common specialization areas for I.Ed. to M.Ed. levels whereas under Vocational Education specialization, Business Education, Industrial Education and Home Science are offered upto B.Ed. level. Under General Education, Curriculum and Evaluation and Educational Planning and Management are offered at M.Ed. level only whereas Vocational Education has no M.Ed. programme. Early Childhood Development, Primary Education and Special Needs Education & Population Education are offered at Bachelor’s level only. Both the B.Ed. programmes are single subject specializations with focus on professional skills. There are also elective courses and interdisciplinary courses for inter-disciplinary areas.
In order to devise, develop and review the academic courses from time to time there are different subject committees under the FOE. Nine existing Subject Committees have been expanded to 14. The newly formed subject committees are:


1) Special Needs Education. Early Childhood Development Education and Primary Education,

2) Geography Education,

3) History Education,

4) Economics Education,

5) Political Science Education and

6) Physical Education Subject Committee.


Recently, GIS (Geographical Information Systems) and RS ( Remote Sensing) courses are introduced under the Department of Geopraphy Education. Computer Science for Mathematics Education has been introduced under the Department of Mathematics Education, both from last academic session.
